Peter Thomas VE7PT

May 27, 2023/0 Comments/in Uncategorized/by Andrew Woodsworth VE7PT

The original VE7PT, Peter Thomas, was my teacher at Royal Oak High School in the 1950s and early 1960s.  He encouraged the formation of a radio club at the school.  He was also the CO of the local Naval Reserve, HMCS Malahat, on Wharf Street.  One night he took me down there to see the reservists operating an HF net from the top floor of the building.  I asked what the frequency was but he wouldn’t tell me, so when I got home I listened on my Heathkit short wave receiver and easily found them.  After his death I was proud to obtain his call sign.

Wall-to-wall CW

May 26, 2023/0 Comments/in Uncategorized/by Glenn Lindsey VA7HC

The 20-meter band had wall-to-wall CW during the start of the CQ World Wide WPX Contest. This photo capture using KiwiSDR was taken at 18:50 PDT. 40 and 15 meters also had good activity. 10 meters was quiet.

80-meter phone net

May 25, 2023/0 Comments/in Uncategorized/by Glenn Lindsey VA7HC

Got on the 80-meter net on Wednesday evening at 1800 hours. Being a mobile operator I found myself a spot up on Beacon Hill.

Garry VA7NV joined me with a nice 5 by 9 signal from Colwood. Dave VE7OU called in from Sooke. I could hear him with quieter 5 by 5 signal; but he couldn’t hear me. Maybe the sun was the problem. Maybe it was my vertical polarized antenna.

However, there were no “maybe’s” about the rag chewing. Good fun all around. One of the joys of HF.
