Field Day at Oak Bay Marina

June 27, 2026/1 Comment/in General Interest/by Andrew Woodsworth VE7PT

Alan VE7UBA, Brian VE7JKZ and Andy VE7PT spent a few hours chasing a few contacts in Queen’s Park just north of Oak Bay Marina.  It was a beautiful day but propagation was very disappointing. We found that Alan’s home-made antenna with self-measuring radials (made out of tape measures) vastly outperformed Andy’s commercial Chameleon Antenna.

Thanks for posting this Andy. Field Day is all about making things work, and yes we had a few challenges. I discovered that the CW keyer in my Xiegu G90 didn’t work very well, making the code that we sent sound like gibberish. ha! Luckily we also did QSOs via FT8 and SSB. Although we had two radios (class 2A), 20 meters was the only band that worked.
