A terrific turnout for the UVIC SDR workshop. Levente Buzas (UVIC radio station manager/researcher) led the workshop with help from some engineering students. Attendees included Ron VE7IRR, Chris VA7CXM, Steve VA7KH, David VA7VK, Peter VE7PLI, Dale VA7RFE, Doug VE7HZY, John VE7MHI, Brayden VA7BKW, Zachariah VE7ZCZ and Glenn VA7HC.
Many thanks to Levente and Ethan who were very helpful in working with IslandHF members to get SDR working on their laptops.
On Tuesday evening March 26th, Brayden Wise VA7BKW’s HF Digital Modes presentation was terrific. He used a combination of a well prepared slide package, real time demonstration of the FT8 digital mode, and a solid question and answer dialogue.
The link to the video presentation can be found here. The passcode is k4!3v5af

Many of you probably started out as a shortwave listener. I started listening to international broadcasts with an old Deforest-Crosley radio in one of those big old wooden cabinets. Probably with my ear to the speaker I listened to the overseas service of the BBC. I have one of its QSL cards.
I graduated to a Hallicrafters receiver (can’t remember which model) which I purchased for $60 in probably 1963. With a long wire antenna strung between two telephone poles in my parent’s backyard I was able to listen to some really interesting broadcasters. Below I show three of them: Czechoslovakia, Ghana, and the Congo. I received the Czech QSL card five years before they were invaded by the Warsaw Pact.
